Worshipping God – 'welcoming all'

St. Mary’s Sprotbrough is about a lot more than the building at the heart of the village

Sunday Worship

Our noticeboard proclaims it, and it's what we seek to do at St. Mary's. Our beautiful Grade I listed building proclaims in silent stone God's constant presence. That presence has been experienced by generations of residents of our beautiful village, and the wider parish of Sprotbrough, and Cadeby.

A presence there in the joys and sorrows of life's key moments, and there in the daily challenges of ordinary life. People attest to the tranquillity of the church and its grounds which allows them to feel held and secure, stepping aside from the noise and rush into a space more timeless and solid. It's a space in which we hope you too will find both tranquillity and a warm welcome. '

We believe that, in all our diversity, we are created in the family likeness of God. St. Mary's seeks to create a safe space where each person can discover God's presence in their daily lives and circumstances, and in one another.

We celebrate our differences, and learn and grow best by exploring faith in God together. Because we are different, we learn in different ways; so, through a variety of services, groups and social events, we hope you will find something for you.

We believe that God is present and at work not only in the church, but in the world around it, in our community and those who live and work here. That's why we seek to grow partnerships, working with others to bless the community we love, and which we believe God loves. We'd love you to share in this, partnering with us and discovering more of the God who loves you and believes in you.

Day off: Friday/Saturday

God of all times and ages,

May your unfailing strength support us,

Your unfailing love surround us,

Your unfailing goodness overcome all that is evil.

Give patience, ingenuity and courage to all who are seeking to develop the means to keep us safe from the virus.

Help us to support those whose lives and livelihoods have been damaged by it.

In Jesus' name. Amen

Christenings (Baptism)

Congratulations!! The birth of a baby is a momentous and wonderful event. It's no surprise that those who experience it often feel the need to mark the arrival of a new life in the church.

weddings
Weddings

Though these happen in many venues, a church marriage is different . This is not a venue, it is a place of worship in which a couple can seek God's blessing on their new life together. The vows are traditional and timeless, but the service will be as unique as the couple!

funerals
Funerals

We seek to support with sensitivity and care those grieving the loss of a loved one. In saying goodbye, we celebrate their life in its uniqueness, trusting in a God of new beginnings.

journey

Journey into Faith/Confirmation

A special service where those baptised in childhood can take ownership of the promises made for them then. Confirmation is an opportunity to make a public declaration of faith. For those who have not been christened, this can happen at the same time.

We have a close and valued link with St Mary's Church. Our annual Harvest Service sees St Mary's filled with children, staff, parents/carers and relatives and a huge number of harvest gifts, very generously donated by families.

Diocesan Prayer

Living God, Jesus calls his followers to seek first your Kingdom.

Renew us as we make your love known;

Release us to share freely together in mission;

and

Rejuvenate us to be fruitful in your service.

Give us courage, wisdom and compassion,

that strengthened with the grace of the Holy Spirit,

we may, as the Diocese of Sheffield,

both flourish and grow through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Church History
National Churches Trust
There is no mention of a church in The Doomsday Book but there can be little doubt that there was a place of worship here then. There is a Saxon inscribed stone built into the chancel outer wall which may be a fragment of a Saxon cross.  The original church was almost certainly small with just a nave and chancel. The present church is late Norman and is thought to be built around 1170. In 1516, the roof was replaced and clerestory windows added. The original roof line is still visible. There are many wonderful things to see inside the
